Collection
Procedure
-
Immediately after birth, clamp the umbilical
cord as close to the baby's abdomen as possible.
Use 2 clamps. Avoid delays as stem cells tend to
migrate very quickly to the newborn.
-
Cut the umbilical cord between the two clamps
and remove the baby from the sterile
environment.
-
Before the delivery of the placenta, disinfect
the umbilical cord at the point where the needle
will be inserted. Use the alcohol tissues. A
sterile environment is a must.
-
Take the sterile blood bag out of its packaging
and place it nearby.
-
Insert the needle in the disinfected area of the
umbilical cord area. The needle should be
attached to the CPD sterile blood bag.
-
Fill the bag to capacity if possible (the bag
can contain 250cc or approximately 300gr).
Please ensure that a minimum of 80cc of blood is
collected into the bag
(Excluding 35cc CPD-anticoagulant).
-
It may be necessary to draw blood from several
places in the umbilical cord.
-
Please first puncture the cord blood with the
needle close to the clamps and climb up the cord
if necessary to draw more blood.
-
Please ensure that these places have been
properly sterilized on before hand.
-
After the collection bag is filled, squirt the
blood through the tube into the bag.
-
Tie at least 2 security knots in the collection
tube to prevent leakage during transportation
(do not use sutures for this).
-
Cut the needle from the bag and dispose of it
appropriately and in accordance with hospital
waste disposal regulations.
-
Turn the bag over slowly several times, in order
to mix the cord blood with the CPD
anticoagulant.
-
Identify the bag with the mother information
stickers enclosed within.
-
The collected cord blood must be kept at room
temperature. It must not be placed in a
refrigerator or freezer.
** In case of twins, the entire process must be
repeated, using a separate collection kit for each
child.
